Adam de Paor-Evans Publishes Book: The Dark Nineties
Dr. Adam de Paor-Evans has published a new autotheoretic book: The Dark Nineties: Falling out of Love with Hip Hop (Squagle House, 2025), which concludes the HEADZ Trilogy exploring engagement with hip hop culture by lived experience and artefact proxy.
Blurb:
The Dark Nineties: Falling out of Love with Hip Hop follows Scratching the Surface and Hip Hop in The Sticks, as the third and final part in the HEADZ trilogy.
Framed as autofiction, The Dark Nineties: Falling out of Love with Hip Hop furthers the mixed methodologies of the previous two books, where autoethnography, close [spatio-material-textual] reading, and artefact analysis intertwine to produce work. Additionally, the representational relationships between text body and footnote are further strategized to present a deepening relationship between the autoethnographic and the nonfiction contextual novel. In The Dark Nineties,de Paor-Evans reveals 21 flash stories which speak persuasively to his internal questioning of self and his relationship with hip hop culture. Whilst the main themes throughout these 21 stories suggest a rejection of hip hop, the extensive endnotes reveal an invisible counternarrative which augmented a decade-long provocation for heart, mind, and soul. This book is for anyone interested in story telling through architecture, ethnomusicology, and finding one’s place in the world.
