Kath Hughes Presents at Rhythm as Knowledge Conference: Biometric Bodies Breathe

On Wednesday 5th November 2025, Dr. Kath Hughes presented at the Rhythm as Knowledge conference at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, as part of a panel titled Rhythm and Technology. The talk titled, ‘Biometric Bodies Breathe: Exploring affective data representations of moving bodies, rhythmic synchronicities and embodied feedback loops in immersive XR’, presented an ongoing collaborative research project between Kath Hughes and Daniel Bacchus, which is investigating how the phenomenological affordances of immersive XR technologies can be used to create visually, spatially, and sensorially responsive avatars of our biometric bodies, in synthesis with real-time biometric data. Combining biometric heart-rate data with motion capture, audio capture and virtual production techniques, the project is asking how collective embodied feedback loops, rhythmic synchronicities, and affective resonances in XR environments might open up alternative, relational and somatic ways of understanding our digitally-mediated bodies within the contemporary digital zeitgeist.
