Luci Gorell Barnes Presents at Social Sciences Student Conference: Box of Ethics

On Thursday 30 October 2025, Luci Gorell Barnes presented at the 2025 Social Sciences Student Conference: Everyday and Beyond - Encountering, Sharing, Caring. Luci's paper was entitled 'Developing ‘A Box of Ethics’ to prompt children’s perspectives around ethical issues in research'.

Despite growing awareness of the need to engage differently with participants round research ethics there is still work to be done to develop child-centred processes that go beyond the standard adult-framed ethics procedures required by universities. Inspired by Victoria Edwards’ 'Case of Ethics’, I created a 'Box of Ethics', which used playful objects and information cards designed  to engage the participating children in informal and active discussions about research ethics and the scope and purpose of the study.
