Jessie Edwards-Thomas Performs at Darkness Photography Conference

On Friday 20 March, Jessie Edwards-Thomas presented an original poem and moving image work at Darkness: A Photography Conference at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The conference examined the significance of darkness, proposing to invert thinking about photography and remind us of the image’s many entanglements and consequences, buried possibilities and repressed impulses. Drawing together artists, researchers, writers, curators, the conference made visible the many resonances of darkness as a necessary subject in approaching photography’s elaborate material, industrial, psychical and social roots and interconnections.

Jessie’s poem explores the experience of childbirth through the interplay of light and darkness.
